Exida announced today that it has merged with Byres Research to “form the world’s first company offering functional safety and security certification and consultation”. Since Exida is much larger it appears to be more of an acquisition than merger. And entering soap opera territory, it also reunites to some degree Byres with his ex-Wurldtech partners as Wurldtech and Exida announced a partnership a mere two weeks ago. This is a small and odd community.
Checking the Byres press release it is clarified that Byres Security will remain independent and focus on the Tofino field security device. I’ll have to find out where Eric will land or will he be cloned?
This is more evidence of growing interest, and perhaps money?, in the safety / security intersection in control systems. Bryan Singer has been on this for a while now and is pursuing this at Kenexis. ISA 99 is more actively liaising with ISA 84. There are other industry projects underway that will come to light shortly in this area. Heck, we even had the connection of control systems and safety systems as The Great Debate in this years S4.
