No, this is not what you think it is. In fact, it is almost the opposite.
Control system applications and components are increasingly being used to monitor critical IT Data Centers. We heard quite a bit about this at the PI Developers Conference, especially related to monitoring the power, environmental and system performance in the Data Center.
A recent report by the Gartner Group shows why Data Centers are looking for monitoring assistance. There are huge $$$ in these large data centers in both the cost of running them and the lost revenue for every second they are down.

This is one of the very best bits of assistance that SCADA can bring to the IT sector: expertise in validating, and reacting to alarms in real time.
Often overlooked things in the IT sector include spotting HVAC problems before they get serious, trending power consumption and raising alarms when it starts getting out of hand, tracking UPS status, and keeping an eye on the telecommunications infrastructure.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there is a lot we can do for each other, if only people would stop acting as if they were only their staff can handle this technology thingie.
