Nessus DirectFeed Gets a New Name and Goes on Sale

Since we just can’t seem to stop talking about naming issues related to the Bandolier project (Audit File vs. Template, Categories, Severity Ratings), here’s one more: Tenable is changing their Nessus DirectFeed product to ProfessionalFeed.  This annual subscription service is a prerequisite for using the Bandolier audit files. Among other things, it also gives you access to the SCADA plugins developed by Digital Bond. This change becomes effective July 31. Don’t worry, though, current DirectFeed customers will automatically become ProfessionalFeed subscribers – no action necessary.

The cost for the Direct/ProfessionalFeed is normally $1200 but Tenable is offering a $300 rebate through the month of July. The coupon code and more information can be found here. That’s good timing for those who need to purchase the subscription to use the Bandolier audit files that will be released in July.

I doesn’t seem kosher to me that your DoE project is now reliant on a for-purchase tool from a specific vendor. The project seemed like a decent idea until now.

Hi anon.

Fair comment. We try to pick the most widely used product to have the greatest impact on the market. So in vulnerability scanners that is Nessus for Bandolier. For historians in the energy sector that is OSIsoft’s PI Server for Portaledge.

Later on in the project, in 2009, we will be converting the Nessus Audit Files to OVAL / XCCDF format so they can be used in other scanners.

Similarly, we will be making the information on the Portaledge meta events programmed as PI ACE templates available so other SEM or historian products will have access to the correlation rules or recipes.
